Why not make them a fertilizer source?  Compost rotted food and save your saltpeter for making gunpowder.

hmm .. yea saltpeter is sometimes hard to find... Rotten foods can become 'organic' fertilizers... we gotta crush it using crafting table first, like we do for flour, then we can just sprinkle it wherever we want. :D

You can use rotten food as a distraction, toss it to beasts. Don't know if it'd stop them coming after you though, I'm usually on a roof doing that.

I think just processing it through the crafting table would be too easy since rotten food is now ever-present. But I definitely like the general idea of recycling it as fertilizer. Maybe a more complex path, however. More realistic would be compost heap...

And unless this changed, yes you can toss it out to distract a predator from chasing you.

Not really. If the predator is already chasing you, it's too late. They won't mind continuing the chase and will leave the meat behind. If it's before the chase, then yes, it can distract them.
