Klaus has already answered this.

"Multiplayer is the most requested feature. This feature would take X months to complete while survivalcraft stands still. In the meantime, all the low-hanging fruit will be added to improve the SC experience until multiplayer will be added."

My paraphrased version of kaalus' answer.

With LAN, this could really blow Minecraft out of the water.

Local Area Network Multiplayer would be great, but even better would be servers; however, the elephant in the room right now is hosting: who's going to pay for that? I think maybe if Kaalus were to add a fee for hosting or allowed you to set up a server on your own computer (my raspberry pi would work great for that!), then it might not be a problem. The real challenge right now is transmitting data from one device to another. As of 2.1, there is single device multiplayer, so once Kaalus tackles wireless I don't think it will be long. Either lan or bluetooth would be great!

WAN play (online) does NOT need servers.

Definitely! Here's to hope the experiment in split screen is actually the first step to full online! Either server based or direct...
