I think all animals should drop 1-x bones when killed, whether they drop other stuff like meat, fur, leather or nothing at all.

Why do I say this?
Well I propose to be able to use the bones to craft bone handled weapons and tools.
Whey will not be quite as durable as the wood handled ones, say 80% of the durability?

Why would we bother to create bone handled weapons and tools I hear you ask....
When you create a map with low or no humidity there is no trees.
Therefore there is no way to create weapons or tools at all. No way to defend yourself.

Thoughts?

I imagine animals dropping skulls when killed. It should be fairly uncommon but they would make for good decoration.

That's a great idea. Bones can be used like wooden sticks; but we can indeed also imagine bone arrows, tools and weapons. Plus gives a good reason to go hunting

Speaking of material "class", I'd rather put them between wood and stone, even between stone and iron.
Bones get a rating of 5.0 on the Mohs hardness scale, which is above tooth enamel (rated around 340 on the Knoop hardness scale, equivalent 4-4.5 Mohs); teeth being significantly harder than wood, and even steel.

(Considering the fact Diamond's considerated as top tier material for tools in SC, material class is determined by hardness ratings, not durability; an IRL diamond sword would be destroyed faster than your opponent himself x); same thing about your teeth and a steel fork)

@warpgamer - Bone may have a high hardness, but is normally much more brittle than wood and can't handle the shock of axe or pick quite as well as wood. If you are looking for something harder than the iron I proposed carbon/tool steel in this post: http://survivalcraft.lefora.com/topic/19405954/Carbon-Steel#.VMu5u2g7N2E
As for the diamond in game. They are used to coat the weapons or tools, like a diamond edged masonry/stone cutting blade. This only enhances the durability of the tool/weapon, keeping it sharper for longer or keeping it's shape longer in the case of a pick maybe?
